Reselling Domain Names
Reselling Domain Names

Reselling Domain Names
September 2005
You offer web hosting services. Or web design services. Or both. When your clients need domain names for their websites, do you want to send them to another site, possibly to a competitor, to register one?
Of course not. That's part of why domain name registration is a popular service to offer. Reselling domain names provides an additional service to attract and keep clients as well as another source of recurring revenue. You can offer domain name registrations on their own or bundled with other services you provide.
Features of domain name reseller programs
When you are a domain name reseller, your clients register domain names using the service accessed through your domain name reseller account. The domain name company bills you, and you bill your clients. Or possibly the domain company handles the billing.
You decide on the retail pricing, and you market your services. The wholesale prices you pay before you add your markup depend on your sales volume and on the domain name reseller program you choose.
All of the domain name reseller companies compared in this article offer a reseller API (Application Programming Interface), which enables you to use the features provided with the domain reseller program. When your clients register domain names or update records at your site, the API communicates with the domain name reseller program system. With an API at your website, you keep the appearance and branding of your site when you resell domain names.
Two of the domain name companies compared here offer website creation tools for resellers, which means that you can be in the business of reselling domain names within minutes of having your account set up.
Many domain name reseller programs require the domain name reseller to pay and regularly top up a deposit for domain names. By doing this, the domain name reseller is paying for the domains in advance while making a profit from them when they're registered.
Domain name companies compared
The starting prices listed are the highest current wholesale prices for .com domains. Some other extensions may be higher, and the prices typically decrease with volume pricing.
See the company websites for more details about what each domain name reseller program offers.
BulkRegister
BulkRegister's Domain Pilot tool allows domain name resellers to provide their clients with a unique URL and access code to make changes to the Whois data for their domains. Resellers can control which of the fields to provide their clients with access to. Registration can be automated or manual.
Resellers become BulkRegister members and are invited to take part in discussions about product ideas, upgrades, and updates. A $50 Overture advertising credit comes with the first year of membership.

Why Generic Domain Names Attract More Search Engine Traffic
Why Generic Domain Names Attract More Search Engine Traffic
by Abe Cherian
Investing in a quality Generic Domain Name is the most effective and long lasting Marketing Strategy for your Internet based operation.
In today's competitive online marketplace, it's increasingly difficult to get your website noticed or even seen by your prospective customers.
Unless you are a large company with tens of thousands of dollars to spend on advertising and search engine optimization -- you may end up in the bottomless pit of huge search engine databases and never get the attention you deserve...
Now, there is an easier way to get noticed and attract millions of search engine visitors starting from day one.
The choice of your Domain Name is the most important Marketing Strategy you'll ever make to help you to rank higher on thousands of Search Engines and attract millions of visitors each year.
The truth is, websites with Generic Keywords in their domain name WILL list higher (in the first 20 listings on top Search Engines) than the most optimized websites and is easier to find on top Search Engines.
Before purchasing a domain name, there are many things to consider. In order to be seen by buyers when they are using a search engine to look for a product or service, it is essential that your website be one of the first 20 or so listed. One of the best ways to insure this, is to use a GENERIC domain name for your website.
For Example...
Using a search engine is very similar to looking up a product or service in the Yellow Pages of your local phone book - under the generic name of the product/service you will find companies that have what you are looking for. Similarly, on the internet, some search engines list websites by how closely the website name compares to the item being searched for.
If your business name is ABC Corp. and you are in the business of selling 'Baby Toys' online. You'll drive thousand times more targeted traffic if your Domain names includes your "Main Key Word" on it like:
TopBabyToys.com
JustBabyToys.com
CustomBabyToys.com
AmericanBabyToys.com
UltimateBabyToys.com or,
ABCKidsToys.com; Instead of your brand name ABCCORP.COM.
A good generic domain name can put you way ahead of your competition in the search engines, and, can literally be worth many millions of dollars.
In the past, some companies believed that company recognition was the key and were willing to pay a lot of money to obtain this. The internet, however, is changing the way that knowledgeable company executives are attracting buyers.
Unless you are willing to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on advertising, it is much more important to select a generic domain name that identifies the product or services you provide to users on your website.
With a GENERIC domain name and a programmer who understands the importance of generic keys to search engine spiders, your website can be way above your competition on internet search engines.

How to Pick the Perfect Domain Name
How to Pick the Perfect Domain Name
by Adrian Mullan
What makes the perfect domain name?
Well, it has to be:
1. Relatively short
2. Simple to remember
3. Easy to spell
I was speaking to a customer recently who had a business called 'Otway Valley Trading Company'.
The domain name he wanted was: www.otwayvalleytradingcompany.com
Can you spot some of the problems with this domain name?
Here's a few:
1. It's too long:
Having to type a long domain name into your browser is annoying and also increases the chances of your customers making a spelling mistake.
2. Too many keywords:
Having 4 keywords (Otway Valley Trading Company) makes it hard for customers to remember the name of the site.
Try to stick to one or two keywords in your domain name.
3. Easy to misspell:
The word 'otway' can be easily confused for 'ottway'.
4. Makes the email address too long:
An email address for this domain name would look like this:
sales@otwayvalleytradingcompany.com
... that's a mouthful for anyone to remember.
Picking a Good Domain Name:
1) The shorter the better
Having a short and snappy domain name makes it easier for your customer to remember your website address, and easier to type into their Internet browser.
2) Go for something catchy
Keep in mind that your domain name doesn't have to be boring. In fact, if you can come up with something catchy - it's a great way to distinguish your business from the competition - just ask the people at Yahoo!.
3) Avoid using hyphens
We've found that hyphens in domain names tend to confuse people.
Sometimes you'll see websites that have a hyphen separating keywords (e.g. ace-accounting.com). This is almost always because the preferred name (aceaccounting.com) has already been registered by someone else.
If the domain you want is already being used by someone else, then you're better off coming up with an alternative name then using hyphens.
4) Avoid using numbers
If possible, try avoiding the use of numbers in your domain name, as this can also lead to confusion (e.g. was that 3phones.com or threephones.com ?).
But if you have to use a number, make sure you register both the written and numerical versions of your domain name (3phones.com and threephones.com).
5) Grab a thesaurus
If you're struggling for inspiration or finding it difficult to come up with a name that hasn't already been taken - grab a thesaurus (or visit Thesaurus.com)
Say you run an adventure tour company and you want to register excitingadventures.com - but somebody has already registered the domain name.
Lookup the word 'exciting' at Thesaurus.com and you can quickly find an alternative like 'breathtaking, sensational or fascinating'.
And don't be afraid to use a little imagination - companies like Google and Yahoo! have benefited a lot by having a unique web address.

Domain Extensions Battlefield
Domain Extensions Battlefield
by Dimitar Avramov
But besides the web hosting services there is a domain market where the battle is even more cruel. The Wall Street Journal today published an article about domain dispute over .NU domain extension.
.NU indicates "Niue", a tiny South Pacific island near Tonga. Dot-nu is the national internet suffix of this country but it has become very popular in Sweden because ".nu" means "now" in swedish.
A internet entrepreneur Bill Semich, from Massachusetts got .Nu licence in the late 90's and started exploring it. He thought .nu would be a cheaper alternative to expensive at this time dot-com domains. The american market has not took in the idea of dot-nu domains, however good news came from Sweden where about 110,000 domains has been sold from Mr. Semich's company called "NU Domain Ltd.".
Once the domain name business of the american businessman has become profitable the Niue island authorities has opened dispute against the ownership over the domain name. Getting money from exploring exploiting the NU domain is important for the island and its 1200 inhabitants. The local government says that it can raise money from dot-nu selling.
Whos's Right and Whos' Wrong
The big questions is should the governments have to receive the right to control their country's top level domain (TLD) or it is better a private companies to maintain domain under certain regulations?
Mr. Semich who invested more that $100.000 in its dot-nu business has brought the internet to Niue. He made the people from the small island the world's first nation with free internet access to all citizens by building an wireless network in Niue. He say his company pays voluntary a part of its profit to the local government.
The expression of his interest was at first welcomed by the Niue's authorities. Now the managing director of the local Telecom says that taking control over the domain name is "a huge issue of national development for us" and insist the Niue must take the ownership over dot-nu from the businessman.
This is typical bureaucratic reaction you can see worldwide. Governments did not pay attention on internet and online communications in the 80's and in the beginning of 90' and even put obstacles to new internet companies. There are still countries like Cuba, where the possession of computer and the use of internet connection is prohibited.
Now governments realize the importance and the power of the internet and most of them are trying to control it. The niue government claimed in 2003 that Mr. Semich company must be licenced and the telecom minister shut down the internet service that hos company provided to the citizens. The minister Toke Talagi even sent request to ICCAN to transfer the ownership and management of the dot-nu to the island's government.
The things would went wrong for the US entrepreneur but local people began to miss the internet service. So restoring the internet service has become a big political issue and a part of the election campaign in Niue in late 2003. A few days before election day, the interim prime minister allowed the "NU Domain Ltd." to reopen the islands wireless network.
People got their free wi-fi. Now the authorities are negotiating with the american businessman to increase the benefits the Niue receives from the domain name.
The story is available on WSJ's web site. The article's name is "Catchy Web Name Sparks a Battle".

Domain Name Registration Basics
Domain Name Registration Basics
by Joe Duchesne
The domain name registration process can be confusing to first time buyers. There are a number of terms to worry about. Hopefully, with the information below, you'll be able to successfully register domain names while avoiding the pain that can sometimes come from the domain registration process.
What the heck is a nameserver anyway? Nameservers refer to a service that runs on servers belonging to a web hosting company that hosts the account that the domain name will point to. Every domain name on the internet must point to an IP address but each IP address can have multiple domain names on it thanks to shared hosting. Entering the nameservers of the hosting company you have for the domain name you are registering lets the big DNS nameservers on the internet know where to find the hosting account for the domain name in question. Without this service, it would be impossible for any computer to find any web page. This is all usually done very quickly in a fraction of a second.
Whois information is another thing to get knowledgeable about. Whois refers to the owner of the domain name. This information is provided by you when you register a domain name. This information in turn is offered to anyone who cares to search for it. For this reason, it is important to consider privacy issues when entering your information for a domain name. It is not advisable to falsify domain name information. At the same time, you may use the most generic information you can when entering your domain. If you have a work address and home address, use the work address. If you have a post office box number and a street address, include the post office box number only.
How many years should you consider registering your domain name? I would argue that it depends what you are going to use the domain for. If it is your business name and you intend to be in business for at least the next five years, I would register it for five years. That way, you don't have to worry about it for a long time. In fact, you can register domain names for up to ten years. If you register your domain for that long, you won't have to worry about it for a decade. Maintenance and stress free.
Make sure you lock your domain. After you've registered your domain name, log into the control panel for your domain name and confirm that it is locked. What does locking do for you? It prevents anyone from transferring your domain name to another registrar without your authorization. Most registrars require you to approve the transfer by clicking on a link but some registrars may simply allow the transfer if you don't expressly forbid it. Miss an email and you could lose your domain name. Don't take a chance. Lock your domain name right away.
